Backflow Protection

Backflow Protection
Irrigation is considered a low to medium risk when it comes to backflow prevention; however the implications in respect to public health are such that the law says that prevention must be considered.

The final selection is best left to the installers of the units as they are qualified to select the correct unit for each application. Section 10 of the Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewage and Drainage By-Laws 1981 specifies AS3500.1-1982 as the standard.

Under the Act, only a licensed plumber can install a backflow preventer.

Some general criteria used when making an evaluation include:

  • Is the irrigated area subject to flooding or ponding of water?
  • Is there a point of the irrigation system higher than the connection point to the mains?
  • Is there any chance of cross connection or contamination of the source from the system?
