When to Irrigate

When to Irrigate

Irrigation during the day has been restricted because it wastes water. Evaporation can account for a loss of up to 50% on hot, windy days. The best time to irrigate is just before the plant needs the water.

As plants only photosynthesize during daylight hours, the best time is early in the morning.

An exact time cannot be recommended because available pressure is often a factor. Watering early allows the water to soak into the root zone and be available to the plant throughout the day when they need it most.

Watering in the evening, particularly overhead watering can create ideal conditions for the development of fungal diseases, so should be avoided.
